The effect of company

One of the comments on one of my recent posts reminded me of this sher [came across it on the net, with no credits].

It describes the effect of posting policemen on security duty in kavi-sammelan's [poetry recitals]:

Rafta rafta har police-wale ko shayar kar diya
Mehfil-e-sher-o-sukhan mei.n bhej kar sarkaar ne
Ek kaidi subah ko faansi lagaa kar mar gayaa
Raat bhar ghazalei.n sunaayi.n usko thaanedaar ne

[Gradually every policeman became a poet
by getting posted at poetry recitals
A prisoner committed suicide in the morning
The sentry recited poems to him the entire night]

Ha Ha Ha! Lovely sher!

Lot of years back, I had watched a Hasya-kavi sammelan on Doordarshan. Someone recited a poem on similar lines. I don't remember the poet nor the early half of the poem but here it is:

[The situation is that a few robbers enter the poet's house in the night and the poet catches them. Here's what happens next.]

20 kavita, 15 ghazalein aur
25 muktak hamne padhe,
Chor kya karte bechare,
unko bhi sunne pade,

Ro rahe the chor saare,
Ro-ro kar kehne lage,
Ghar aaye huye atithiyon ko,
kavitayein sunana paap hai,
Arey hum to sirf chor hain,
tu to daakuon ka baap hai!

@Cuckoo: Thanks for the compliment. But the lines weren't my own as I mentioned :-D

@Princess: Ha ha! Does that motivate you to learn Hindi ? ;-)

@LeziB: Di I see the theme in action ? LOL!!
Funny poem! I do remember reading it (or something similar) :-D

Interesting sher, & isn't it in some ways also describe the state of affairs of the law-keepers of our country?

Very Funny

Sigma said...

@Kalyan: Well, I for one, wouldn't associate the law-keepers with something as delicate as poetry :-D

@Pijush: :-))
